RTOOLS (Ready To Optimize Outcomes of Literacy at School) is a training program that equips parents of children entering school with the skills needed to successfully navigate and participate in the school system. Essential Skills, defined by Employment and Social Development Canada as skills necessary for work/learning/life, are embedded throughout course content to increase parental employment skills and help put people to work.
Some of the skills a parent might need include:
- The ability to correctly complete forms/documents (document use)
- An understanding of when and how to contact a child’s teacher/principal (oral communication)
- Knowledge of community supports and services (continuous learning)
- Skills to advocate on behalf of a child (advocacy)
- Email (computer use)
- Capacity to create and follow healthy routines and practices at home, such as arriving on time and prepared for the day (time management)
- Proficiency to read and understand educational jargon and terminology (reading)

- Your Child’s Safety
- School Paperwork
- Effective Communication with Teachers
- Community Awareness/ Advocacy
