Do you like to work outdoors? Tri-County Literacy Council is offering a FREE 5-week course for the entry-level position of Landscaping and Grounds Maintenance Labourer. Participants practice Essential Skills while learning about this occupation, meet industry guest speakers and attend a site visit. Course topics include:
- soil preparation
- garden design
- work safety
- and more
The training is suitable for a variety of learners including those planning to enter the workforce for the first time, people changing careers, and individuals wishing to strengthen Essential Skills.

Tri-County Literacy Council is offering a free 6-week Microsoft Excel course starting Monday, January 7, 2019. Class runs Mondays and Wednesdays 1pm to 4pm.
Microsoft Excel is a useful spreadsheet program that allows you to enter numbers or information into the rows or columns of a spreadsheet. These entries can be used for making calculations of difficult formulas easy, graphs, and statistical analysis.
While learning the basics of Microsoft Excel, learners gain from creating spreadsheets such as a Job Search Log in order to keep track of the positions they apply for (can also be used as a reporting tool). Other learners may discover a love for working with numbers and spreadsheets which may lead them to further education in fields such as Bookkeeping and Accounting. Topics include:

Tri-County Literacy Council is pleased to present its Annual Christmas Open House on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. This year’s theme is “Bring a dessert, enjoy a dessert”. All are welcome to come spend time with our learners, volunteers, special guests and community partners. Visit with Mrs. Claus and participate in some fun Christmas activities!
Tri-County Literacy Council recently launched two new computer courses available free of charge to adults 19+ years of age. Now is the time to take advantage of valuable free training.
Starting November 19, 2018 one of these two courses will be offered.
Microsoft PowerPoint – learn to create captivating electronic slide show presentations with this easy-to-use computer program to:
- showcase your talent with a visual portfolio
- promote your products or services
- demonstrate your computer skills
- create school presentations
- make a family souvenir
Email 101 – whether you’re looking to email your resume to potential employers or connect with family and friends, electronic mail is a very useful and powerful tool. In this training program, you will learn to:
- format messages and attach files in standard acceptable format
- create folders and organize your mailbox
- use the calendar
- assign tasks
- create an address book
- follow proper etiquette
- practice safe email habits
These are certificate programs which allow you to add to your employment portfolio.

International Literacy Day: Monday, September 10, 2018 – 1:30 to 3:30 pm

September 8 was declared International Literacy Day by UNESCO on October 26, 1966. It was celebrated for the first time in 1967. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. Celebrations take place in several countries all over the world.
Join us to learn about the 9 Essential Skills, identified by the Government of Canada as necessary for success at work and everyday life. Also take a mini tour of our agency (located in the historic rectory /manse of Trinity Anglican Church – 101 Second Street West, Cornwall, ON) and learn about its history. Then take a short fun quiz and enter to win a gift from some of our generous donors.
Cake and refreshments will be served.
Tri-County Literacy Council is a community-based, non-profit, charitable organization. Our mandate is to enrich both our community and individuals by addressing literacy needs. To do this, we assess adult learners, help them set goals and provide necessary Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) upgrading; General Educational Development (GED) preparation; apprenticeship preparation; basic computer courses; and occupational training for entry-level positions. We recruit volunteers to assist learners in meeting their employment, personal, and social goals. This method of private instruction can be one-on-one with a tutor or in a small group classroom.
Tri-County Literacy Council, 101 2nd Street West, is pleased to offer a free 5-week course: Retail Associate. Participants practice Essential Skills while learning about the world of retail, what employers look for, customer service, store procedures, sales techniques, and more. Learners also benefit from meeting industry guest speakers and enjoy a site visit to a local retail business.
This program is ideal for anyone planning to work at a retail business such as a clothing or grocery store and is suitable for a variety of learners including those planning to enter the workforce for the first time, people changing careers, and individuals wishing to strengthen Essential Skills. There are nine Essential Skills at differing levels identified by the Government of Canada as necessary for success at work and in everyday life. The skills are reading, writing, numeracy, document use, thinking, oral communication, working with others, digital technology, and continuous learning.
